This project was about discovering something new, being inspired by it and designing something out from it. I researched into design trends and came across Memphis design. It caught my eye straight-away due to its bold patterns and vibrant colours. Doing further research I discovered it was a huge hit back in the 80's and was discovered by Ettore Sottsass and fellow designers. The Memphis movement was about taking a risk and it was influenced by existing design trends such as Pop Art and Art Deco. It involves bold colours, geometric shapes and funky patterns. Camille Walala was a huge inspiration towards this project, along with Benjamin Craven and stationery brand Write Sketch &.
I started to create my own patterns on Adobe Illustrator which was fun to experiment with layout, shapes and colours. I moved on to screen-printing a few shapes and playing around with different colour combinations. I enjoyed creating my own Memphis designs and I believe these patterns can be applied to all sorts of products such as apparel and stationery. I experimented these patterns on greeting cards which was exhibited at New Designers 2017, alongside the prints.
